Project Spotlight: Howard Commons

The new Howard Commons in Howard, Wisconsin opened to the public Labor Day weekend in September 2023 after a year-long construction phase by Miron Construction. Nestled between multiple high density residential buildings Howard Commons is a shining example of a modern public recreation and entertainment center.

The space was designed by Shive-Hattery who was challenged to create a space that reinforces a sense of community, and provides space for outdoor reflection, interaction, performance, and fun!

Graham Images was hired by the Shive-Hattery and Miron teams to photograph the opening Labor Day weekend festivities and returned after the New Year in January 2024 to take photos of winter activities. The photos taken helped to showcase the year-round solution that the Shive-Hattery team created.

Some highlights of the Howards Commons space design includes: an open-air pavilion, an indoor activity center with rental spaces, a multi-season skating rink for roller and ice skating, a state-of-the-art outdoor amphitheater flanked by spacious green space, the all-new Howard Biergarten featuring local craft brews, and a children's splash pad.

Between my two visits for Shive Hattery, the main focus was to showcase the different ways this community space can be used by community members - show people in the space!

Thanks to Shive Hattery and Miron Construction for the opportunity to photograph this year-round family-oriented “place for people.” This well thought out community space has already helped invigorate the Village of Howard and has created a destination for residents in the greater Green Bay area to come and enjoy.
