/// Work at Work

A STORYTELLING PROJECT

Women at Work is all about shining a light on women working in the architecture, engineering and construction community—an industry statistically dominated by men. Reinforcing the message, “If you see it, you can be it,” the project celebrates and showcases women who are creating our built environment in NorthEast Wisconsin. Together, they’re paving the way for others to pursue a rewarding and dynamic career path in the industry.

We are currently seeking 12 women who are interested in being a part of this project and want to shine a light for other women seeking to follow a similar career path. The current timeline for the project has all project participants being interviewed and photographed in 2024 with a release date for the final Women at Work project to be ready in March 2025.

The final product of the project is still in discussion. Current ideas are a moving in-person gallery that will be on display at various locations throughout NorthEast Wisconsin, a photo-journal book that showcases both the images and stories, a website showcasing the stories and potentially other similar pieces.

I am one of thousands of women operating heavy equipment. We can do it!

“When I first began, I was told I was taking a job away from a man’s ability to feed his family. Being hit on, snickered at. After gaining skills in equipment, I gained the respect of the guys I worked with. I am in my first year instructing others at our training center.”

”At my desk I have a photocopy of an excerpt titled "1943 Guide to Hiring Women" from an article that was in the July 1943 issue of Transportation Magazine. It's an eye-opening article and I keep it as a reminder of how far things have come. There may be times when you need to assert yourself, but that is true in any profession. If you have knowledge and sound judgement on your side, and you can communicate calmly in tough situations, you are equipped to handle whatever will come your way.”

I am consistently impressed by women’s resilience, drive, and perspective as they navigate notoriously male-dominated spaces.

”I routinely am the only woman in many of the spaces I occupy, and as I'm sure many women in male-dominated field experience, I feel a larger pressure to ensure that I represent women in a way that makes it clear that more of us belong in those spaces.”
